🖼 Year 6 Activity Group #3 🎨
Out of school for another day! This time it was just a short walk through Honiton to the Thelma Hulbert Gallery where we were introduced to two artistic exhibitions. After studying the tapestries of Anne Jackson’s “Cabinet of Curiosities” and Philippa Lawrence’s intriguing interpretations of “A Space Between”, we focused our attention on the similarities between both artists and their connections with nature and how they used cotton, linen, silk and synthetic yarns in different ways.
Creating ink tree images was much harder when blowing through a straw compared to moving it with a stick! 🌿
Chunky matt wool was the most popular yarn for our next medium when wrapping our chosen tree foliage, with just some of us choosing to add embroidery threads which allowed the light to catch and shine upon branches of our trees. 🧶
After making collages, mosaics and sketches within our art books, we faced our greatest challenge ... bending and flexing willow into spirals to create a lantern! Perseverance, patience and partnership skills were vital in making these structures. Manipulating the willow meant time and focus was also essential as we learnt it became a much harder task if the willow started to dry out! Luckily, we were all very successful and carried home tea lights too that would shine through our woven willow at night. 🕯
What another great day, well done everyone 🤩
