Year 6 Spitfire Gliders
Wed 30 Nov 2022Tuesday 29th November
Spitfire Gliders: during our SOLE lesson this afternoon, the children of year 6 investigated the spitfires used in WW2. We created our own paper versions, then tested their flying capabilities in the playground, measuring the distances travelled, then using our data to find the mean distance of our flights.
It turned out that a few of our gliders were more suited for long journeys than others: some not travelling far at all, whilst others were found to actually be turning around in the air and landing behind the position we had thrown them from!

Year 6 Movember
Wed 30 Nov 2022Monday saw many children (and teachers!) throughout the school sporting a surprising addition to their usual school uniform, in the shape of an array of fabulous moustaches! Our Mo Brothers and Mo Sisters were doing their bit to raise awareness of men’s mental health and the importance of speaking out, as well as encouraging others to speak out, when things get tough.
Many thanks to children and parents for their support.

Nursery Play
Tue 29 Nov 2022Nursery enjoyed exploring the wet weather we had last week. Catching the hailstones and watching them melt in their hands into pools of icy water and splashing in the deep muddy puddles created from all the heavy rain. A fun way to explore the weather and environment!

Honiton Primary School Council
Mon 28 Nov 2022Honiton Primary School Council
Over the past fortnight, we have had the privilege of hearing some superb School Council candidate speeches from pupils of Years 4, 5 and 6.
They were persuasive, well prepared, creative and very impressive! The process of narrowing candidates down to final chosen councillors was exceedingly tough.
The winners were announced this week in assembly and their first duty will be to welcome and meet the local MP Richard Foord.
Well done to all involved!

Year 6 Yew Class Visit HCC
Mon 28 Nov 2022Last Thursday, Yew Class visited HCC to take part in some light and shadow science in the science lab. We began by experimenting with morse code messages, writing then delivering a message to our partner on the other side of the lab, using dashes and dots delivered by torch light. Next, we investigated the effect of distance on shadow length. Quickly, we discovered that the closer the light to our screen, then the shorter the shadow. We measured and collected data to support our findings, then used this date to approximate shadow length when the light was at different distances from the screen. Some of us discovered that the height of the lamp also affected the length of the shadows. This is similar to how shadows change in different seasons: in summer, when the sun is high, shadows are short. In winter, when the sun is lower, shadows are longer.

Year 2 - Exploring and Sorting Shapes
Mon 28 Nov 2022Year 2 have been busy exploring the properties of both 2d and 3d shapes. They know that 2d stands for ‘2 dimensional’ and that these shapes are flat, have sides and vertices. They also know that 3d means ‘3 dimensional’ and that these shapes have length, width and depth.
The children identified 3d shapes as well as identifying their properties and sorting them according to them too. Great fun was had and the children were really excited to share their knowledge and explanations using mathematical language.

Year 2 - Subordinating Conjunctions
Mon 28 Nov 2022We have been learning how to use subordinating conjunctions to join a main clause with a subordinate clause. We loved collaborating with our friends to match the clauses with one another, working out which way round made sense and then adding in the correct punctuation. We learnt that ‘if’ and ‘when’ could be used both at the beginning of the sentence and in the middle of the two clauses.

Year 1 Woodland Tea Party
Mon 28 Nov 2022Year 1 had a fantastic day celebrating all of the learning we have done in our Wonderful Woods project. We learnt about where food comes from and what is a healthy balanced diet. Using this, we prepared some little dishes to make sure we had each part of the Eatwell Plate. Unfortunately, due to the weather, we weren’t able to have a tea party down in the woods as planned but we still had a lovely afternoon making our woodland crowns with the grown ups who came in the classroom!
