  • Year 5 - Separating Mixtures

    Wed 24 Apr 2024 E. Long

As part of Year 5’s science learning, the children explored the different methods to separate a mixture.  They learnt the difference between a mixture and a solution and then explored 4 different ways to retrieve each item from that mixture.

They had to separate: paper clips, rocks, oats, sand, salt and water.

They explored sieving, filtering, using magnets and evaporation in groups to create the cleanest water again.

  • Year 5 - Reversible and Irreversible Changes

    Wed 24 Apr 2024 E. Long

We have been incredibly impressed with the understanding and scientific explanations shown when discussing reversible and irreversible changes.  They were able to include vocabulary such as: solute, solvent, soluble and insoluble as well as discuss chemical reactions!

The children made a prediction and then we went to try it out - What would happen if vinegar was added to bicarbonate of soda?

It is clear to see how excited the children were to see the chemical reaction and particularly the mess that was created from it!  (At least we were in the woods though!)

    Year 5 - Vector Drawing!

Who knew you could draw on a computer!

Year 5 have been learning all about vector drawings and how images are created by the use of layering of shapes.  They have learnt many ‘tools’ in googledrawing and have been able to create, select, change the colour and size, group, insert as well as rotate, crop, resize and flip images!

It has been great seeing the excitement across the classroom and what the children are able to do!

  • Year 5 - Complementary Colours

    Wed 27 Mar 2024 E. Long

As part of our Art this year, Year 5 are looking at what impressionism is as well as post-impressionism.  We are studying Van Gogh, Starry Night, and have spent some time looking at some of the techniques used to create this fabulous painting.

One thing we have learnt about is the use of complementary colours which are contrasting to help the painting ‘pop’.  We see this in the Starry Night with the moons and stars.  Before we attempt our own ‘Starry Night’ paintings though, we had to create our own colour wheel to be able to identify the complementary colours - here are our attempts!
