In a recent assembly, Key Stage 2 were visited by a representative from the UKs Parliament who talked about British Values and in particular … how democracy works. We heard about the House of Commons and the House of Lords and how laws are passed through before looking at our local area and who our MP is (Richard Foord) who also recently visited our school.

  • Year 6 Honiton Hippo Fossils

    Wed 29 Mar 2023 E. Long

Following on from our evolution project, the children in year 6 have been researching fossils, what they are, how they are formed and what they can tell us about evolution. So exciting, then, to be able to look in detail at the Honiton hippo fossils: evidence of an entirely different climate and landscape, right here, over 100,000 years ago!

    Year 6 - Darwin’s Beak Experiment

Year 6 have been learning about Darwin’s theory of evolution and how adaptations impact the survival of living things. Last week, we channelled our inner finches and explored the way that different beaks impact a finch’s ability to collect food. We used a range of beaks (including chopsticks, tongs and tweezers) and tested how well we were able to collect a range of different food sources - including oats, blueberries and tasty gummy bears! Have a look at the pictures to see how we got on!

  • Wild Escape, Thelma Hulbert.

    Fri 24 Mar 2023 E. Long

    Wild Escape, Thelma Hulbert.

Another inspirational day out for our young artists today, beginning with a guided tour around the beautiful Thelma Hulbert Gallery. We were all fascinated to see the different artistic representations of the Blackdown Hills, the children stunning us with their fantastic insight and observational skills.

From there, we worked on another collaborative artwork: a collage of an invented landscape where we might imagine the Honiton Hippo roaming. Starting with rivers and seas, children built and built upon the landscape, layering earth, rocks, plantlife and eventually some human settlements.

The finished work was certainly something to be proud of: the curator of the museum even came to view the piece and has said it may end up as part of a future exhibition!

We are so proud of these talented and creative artists. Next week promises to be very special indeed!

    Rotary Club - Thank You!

You may remember that we previously posted about the powers of Chloe and Phoebe from Year 6 and their incredible persuasive writing skills…

Well, we have another exciting update. After the wonderful generosity of Tesco, we have also been given another amazing £500 from the Rotary Club! We feel very lucky to be supported by such kind members of the local community and would like to say a big thank you to Mr Thomas and his committee for their wonderful donation.
