  • Year 5 Thelma Hulbert Gallery Visit

    Wed 28 Feb 2024 E. Long

Year 5 were lucky to have artists from the Thelma Hulbert Gallery come and deliver an interesting music and art workshop based upon a current exhibition at the gallery.  They were looking at and considering how weather could be emotive and support creativity.

After listening to music, the children created rainmakers using willow and chickpeas and then as an ensemble they created a soundscape - it sounded wonderful!

They then got to create a piece of their own artwork based upon the 4 elements.

  • Year 6 - Strawberry DNA

    Wed 28 Feb 2024 E. Long

This week, Year 6 have been learning all about DNA. After researching this scientific phenomenon, we then had a go at extracting DNA from strawberries. To do this, we had to collaborate effectively and follow our instructions extremely carefully. We were amazed when we saw the layer of DNA separating from the solution; some of us even managed to extract some samples!

  • Year 5 - Persuasive Letter Paragraphing

    Mon 05 Feb 2024 E. Long

Year 5 have embarked on their next writing sequence of writing a persuasive letter to the Texas Environmental Board in regards to Camp Green Lake; a Juvenile Detention Centre in our class novel - Holes, by Louis Sachar.

Within the novel, the boys are forced to live and work in atrocious conditions that are not sanitary, nor safe.  They are forced to 5ft deep holes in the blazing heat with little to no protection from the blazing sun or dangerous wildlife.  This has inspired Year 5 to write a letter to the Texas Environmental board to share their concerns in the hope of getting it closed down.

So far, the children have looked at ‘cause and effect’ sentences and considered what the dangers are at Camp Green Lake and how these could be categorised.  They have then had a go at writing a ‘burger paragraph’ where they had to share a topic sentence, give evidence and then finish with a ‘dare to disagree’ comment.

Throughout, the children have shown great interest and engagement and worked collaboratively to gather as much information that can be included in their letters.

I can’t wait to see what their finished letters will be like!

  • Year 5 Tiny Travels

    Mon 05 Feb 2024 E. Long

Year 5 were very privileged to be visited by Tiny Travels last week.  They learnt so much about many of the countries in Africa as well as how the human race originated there and how humans have evolved and adapted over time due to migration!

It was fascinating for the children to see how stereotypes of Africa are indeed just that, and that there are some amazing, bustling cities across many of the 54 countries that make up the continent.  They got to explore a range of artefacts and items which the children loved and learnt a lot about the different places and cultures.  Many children left with a better understanding of the world around them and our ever changing community and a desire to visit in the future.

A big thank you to Tiny Travels for sharing.

We learnt about their cultures, clothing, food, music and more! Thank you Tiny Travels for a great educational experience!
